World Oceans Day | Help us for a plastic-free ocean!
Reducing plastic use to lessen plastic soup is a topic that currently seems to be on everyone's agenda. And rightly so! Because our oceans suffer tremendously from the amount of waste that ends up in them. We all know that reducing the plastic soup in the ocean is important. Many people immediately think of the turtle with a straw in its nose that went viral in 2015. And it took quite a few years for plastic straws to be truly banned from our society. But the problem is much bigger than just turtles and straws. World Ocean Day, or ocean day, is intended to make people more aware of the importance of a clean ocean and reducing plastic soup. In this blog, we will tell you more about why using less plastic is so important and what else you can do to contribute to the reduction of plastic in our oceans.
Why are the oceans so important?
For years, we focused on the importance of the rainforest for the environment. And rightly so, because the rainforest is responsible for 28% of the oxygen in our air. We know we cannot do without the rainforest, and eating less meat without increasing our soy consumption is one of the ways you can support rainforest conservation.
What many people don't know is that as much as 70% of the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the ocean. Small marine animals such as phytoplankton, but also seaweed, are responsible for most of our oxygen. And they can only do that in a healthy ocean. However, our oceans have become so polluted that they are in danger. It is estimated that there are currently about 296,000 tons of plastic in our ocean. This plastic does not disappear but breaks down into small pieces that end up in our drinking water, our air, and our food. And thus, in us.
Fortunately, the ocean is strong and can recover relatively quickly. But we need your help. Because we all need to be aware of our plastic consumption and do our part, however small, to reduce the plastic soup in the oceans.
Plastic-free Shampoo
One of the ways to do your part for cleaner oceans and reducing plastic soup is by using plastic-free products.
With our plastic-free shampoo bars and plastic-free body bars, you not only save on plastic bottles, but also on transport, CO2 emissions, and water. Because our products are water-free! And don't worry, our shampoo bars lather wonderfully and clean even greasy hair thoroughly. So feel free to try them out.
What else you can do for a plastic-free ocean
Besides using less plastic by buying plastic-free products, you can do much more to contribute to cleaner oceans for our future:
- Eat less meat
- Buy vegetables without plastic packaging
- Use a cloth bag instead of buying plastic bags every time
- Buy/reuse second-hand items
- Use reusable products
- Use biodegradable sunscreen at the beach (and in the sea)
- Consciously eat fish and shellfish
And besides that, you can, of course, participate in beach cleanup actions all over the world. Or spend a day walking along the beach with a grabber and a few garbage bags. If you want to know more about the importance of our oceans and plastic soup, watching the documentary Seaspiracy is highly recommended.
