Natural vs. synthetic fragrances: what's the difference? 🧪

Natural fragrances come from flowers, herbs, or wood, such as lavender or eucalyptus. They provide rich, layered aromas but are often more expensive and sometimes less stable.

Synthetic fragrances are cleverly created in the lab. They can create unique scents that you won't find in nature.

We offer both options so you can make your own choice. We have Bars with both natural and synthetic fragrances. People often think they are allergic to perfume, but in reality, it is to certain allergens. These same allergens can also be found in natural essential oils. You can request an allergy test from your doctor to find out exactly what you are allergic to.

Environmental impact: natural is not always better

Sometimes a synthetic fragrance has less impact than the mass harvesting of natural flowers and plants. You can probably imagine that you need many meters of (flower) fields for a liter of natural fragrance.

Laboratories are also working hard on green chemistry and biotechnology to produce fragrances in more sustainable ways. This way, we can respect nature and cleverly use science for the best scents!

Fragrance allergens and legislation: this is how it works

Did you know that some fragrances – both natural and synthetic – can cause allergies? That's why European law requires that specific fragrance allergens be listed separately on the INCI list.

From 2026, 82 fragrances must be individually named if they exceed minimum threshold values in a product:

• > 0.001% in leave-on products (products that you leave on your skin, such as a body butter)
• > 0.01% in rinse-off products (products that you rinse off within a few seconds, such as shampoo)

This way, as a consumer, you can choose safely and consciously!
