Sensitive scalp and itching
Get rid of your dry, flaky scalp and itching! Do you want to prevent a dry scalp or do you want to get rid of the flakes on your scalp? We are happy to help you.
What are the symptoms of a dry scalp?
Does your colleague, brother or girlfriend often scratch their head and then it seems to "snow" a little? Perhaps he/she suffers from an extremely dry scalp. Dandruff is often confused with a dry scalp, but there is a big difference! The skin of a too-dry scalp feels unpleasant and tight and can be recognized by a chapped and rough scalp with sometimes small white flakes and sometimes a lot of itching! With dandruff, these flakes are larger, greasier and somewhat more yellowish in color and are caused by excessive sebum production. A too-dry scalp can cause your hair to fall out prematurely. Oh, we don't want that! Do you have or know someone with this problem? Then read on quickly.

What are the causes of a dry scalp?
Some people have a genetic predisposition to a dry (scalp) skin. But there are several factors that can cause your scalp to be/feel dry. Some people always have dry skin. Rain or shine. From dry head to dry feet, you are always applying lotions. Maybe you are even a little used to all the lotions. Well, multiple factors cause a dry scalp. In colder months you are more likely to suffer from dry skin because the humidity is lower. In addition, the heating is often on and that also has no favorable effect on your skin. Dryer, dryer, dryest. Not nice! But stress, insufficient fluid intake, washing your hair too hot, unbalanced nutrition and even hormonal fluctuations also affect the skin of your head.
After a long day, a wonderfully warm shower is sometimes so nice, and on a very cold winter day, even wonderfully hot! Unfortunately, this is not very good for your skin and also not for your scalp. Water also dries out the skin, even if it sometimes doesn't feel like it.
A wrong shampoo or hair product can also cause your scalp to dry out. Always check the ingredients. For example, a strong detergent such as SLS can cause the protective layer on your scalp to be cleaned too thoroughly. This dries out the skin, making it sensitive and even itchy. All our Shampoo Bars are free of SLS and SLES!
How to prevent a dry scalp?
To prevent dryness, you need to take good care of your scalp both internally and externally. Internal care is achieved with the right nutrition, possibly in combination with supplements. For external care, it is important to adjust your showering rituals and to care for your hair and skin with the right shampoo for sensitive scalps.
Care for your scalp in the shower
Good scalp care starts in the shower: shower with lukewarm water and use mild, perfume-free shampoo. Don't wash your hair too often, twice a week is more than enough. Thanks to the clever composition of our Shampoo Bars, you don't have to wash your hair as often. This not only saves you a lot of raw materials, water and time, but it also reduces the chance of a dry scalp. In addition, use products that your scalp can tolerate well and preferably on a natural basis.
Eat and drink as healthy as possible
Try to drink a lot and eat healthily. That is not only good for your scalp, but also for the rest of your body. If you feel good, your hair often looks a lot healthier too!
When drinking, assume at least 2 liters per day, preferably water or (herbal) tea. And with healthy food you can think of vegetable oils, fatty fish, nuts and lots of vegetables.
What to do about a dry scalp?
Oil
A nourishing skin oil can be the solution for your (very) dry scalp in combination with a suitable shampoo and supplemented with a hair mask or conditioner.
Oils nourish your skin, stimulate blood circulation and hydrate the scalp. Massaging also has a beneficial effect on blood circulation. It is then important to choose the right oils. Preferably choose natural products such as coconut oil (available at many stores), castor oil, argan oil, jojoba or almond oil.
A suitable shampoo cares for your scalp and hair and does not dry it out. Check out our shampoo bars for sensitive scalps such as the Shampoo Bar Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus oil restores and soothes the scalp.
Scrub
If you have a lot of flakes, it is pleasant to scrub your scalp. Do not do this too often and not too thoroughly to prevent damage to your scalp. If you suffer from eczema on your head, we advise against scrubbing your scalp.
After scrubbing, always rinse your hair well to prevent particles from remaining in your hair, that looks so strange 😉
Scrubbing promotes blood circulation and thus ensures healthy hair follicles, which in turn ensure shiny and healthy hair.
Make your own scalp scrub?
Mix 2 tablespoons of (brown) fine sugar, with 2 tablespoons of ground oatmeal (briefly in the food processor) and 2 tablespoons of argan or olive oil. Always wash your hair before scrubbing, this way you remove hair product and dirt and your scrub works better. Apply the scrub with massaging movements and rinse well with lukewarm water after scrubbing. Then wash your hair as usual,
Did you know that oatmeal helps restore the moisture balance of your skin, while soothing inflammation and irritation and you probably already have it in your cupboard. So nothing complicated!
Hair mask for dry hair
Do you also have very dry hair in addition to a dry scalp? Then try a hair mask. Masks have a nourishing and hydrating effect.
Do you want to apply a mask to your scalp? Then don't use a hair mask for that!
If you have a very dry scalp, you can rub your scalp with coconut oil, olive oil or another natural oil as mentioned above. Leave it on for an hour and then rinse thoroughly (to prevent your hair roots from remaining too greasy).
Shampoo for a dry scalp
Cleanse your hair and scalp with a mild shampoo. Preferably choose perfume-free, natural products such as the Shampoo Bar Eucalyptus or the Shampoo Bar Baby.
Don't wash your hair too often and give your scalp a chance to recover and calm down.
A shampoo bar is economical to use and lasts a long time. In addition, you can dose better and you don't use too much.
